We are an independent bookshop in the heart of the Mackenzie Country, South Canterbury, New Zealand. We are readers and writers, illustrators and editors, artists and artisans, chronic enthusiasts and stargazers, highland wanderers and book lovers.
We are a little shop, in a little town, close to the mountains and pretty far from everywhere - but books make our world a bigger, closer place. Books lend us someone else's brain for a moment. Books throw our gaze on places we've never been. If reading a book is an experience, then the value of that experience lies in the depth of feeling. We, in our little shop, want you to feel something. Feel angry. Feel offended. Feel disappointed. Feel surprised. Feel thrilled. Feel solidarity. Feel sadness. Feel wonder. Feel. Read.
In March 2020, as New Zealand went into Level 4 lockdown, we donated our secondhand collection to the Twizel Community as a free exchange library, to use in lockdown. Therefore, we no longer trade secondhand books, except rare and out of print historical farming books.
We first opened in Twizel in August 2017. In July 2020 our family grew and we opened a sister shop in Bay Hill Books, Timaru.
Both our bookshops are curated to celebrate our landscape, our community and those whose paths cross here. We stock books we love and books we think you'll love.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
